“World Trade Organization: economic and legal framework of regulation”

In June 2019, the St. Petersburg State University implemented an advanced training program “World Trade Organization: economic and legal framework of regulation” for policy-makers and representatives of the academic community of Belarus.

The program is aimed at improving the qualifications of teachers and specialists providing training on the WTO law and practice; enhancing students' knowledge of certain issues of the functioning and development of the modern international trading system. The training was aimed at the securing of the following competencies:

• a capability of analyzing the state’s trade policy in accordance with rules and regulations of the WTO,

• an ability to collect data and analyze tariff and non-tariff trade regulation in WTO member countries,

• an able to teach disciplines related to political, legal, and economic issues of the WTO, using interactive teaching methods

• an ability to apply qualitative and quantitative research methods in the analysis of trade policy,

• an ability to make decisions on the implementation of foreign economic activity in the framework of the rules and regulations of the international trading system.

The classes were conducted by professors of the World Economy Department of St. Petersburg State University who have a doctor’s or candidate’s degrees in economics and/or a professor’s or associate professor’s degrees. All lecturers have experience in academic and practical activities with regard to the regulation of international trade for at least three years. They also participate in the WTO Chairs Project (https://www.wto.org/enplish/tratop_e/devel_e/train_e/chairs_selection_e.htm).
