The Department of Modern Capitalism Economy

The Department of Modern Capitalism Economy at the Economic Faculty, Leningrad State University, was the first scientific and educational centre in the USSR analyzing problems of market economy in various countries and regions all over the world. After its establishment in 1957, the position of the Head of the Department took Doctor of Economic Sciences, an outstanding Professor Sergey Ivanovich Tulpanov. The research field of the Department enveloped economic and political problems of both developed capitalistic countries and third-world countries as well as history of economy and economic science in foreign countries.

In 1979 the Department of Modern Capitalism Economy joined the Department of Politic Economy. However, in 1984 it was restored by the head of the Department, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Andrey Andreevich Demin. And in 1991 it was renamed to be the Department of Foreign Countries’ Economy with the Head of the Department, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Natalia Petrovna Kusnezova.

The Department of International Economic Relations

The Department of International Economic Relations was established in 1982 and has become the first Department with such a research field among the Universities of our country. The establisher and Head of Department became Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Nikolay Alexandrovich Cherkasov. The Department trained the specialists in “International Economic Relations” and delivered researches in the field of world economy.

The Department has become the basic scientific centre of Problematic Commission of Multilateral Scientific Cooperation in Academy of Science of Socialistic Countries “World Socialistic System” and Problematic Council of Ministry of Education of RSFSR “Socialistic Economic Integration” as well as Problematic Commission of Academy of Science of USSR “Problems of Industrial Internationalization and International Economic Cooperation”.

In the 1990-s the scientific interests were reoriented to the research fields of foreign economic policy and foreign relations of Russia, organization and administration of companies’ foreign economic activities.

The Department of World Economy

The Department of World Economy was organized in 1996, having united two leading departments on the Economic Faculty, St. Petersburg State University: the Department of Foreign Countries’ Economies and the one of International Economic Relations. Maintaining good traditions the new Department makes its contribution in the development of Russian Economic Science.

The Department trains specialists in world economy. Students also make a choice between two specializations: “Foreign Economic Activity” and “International Marketing”. The Department offers a wide range of authors’ courses such as “Theoretical Foundation of State Governance of Foreign Economic Activity”, “International Taxation Planning”, “Competitiveness of Export-oriented Production”, “Strategic Planning in Marketing”, etc. Lectures are delivered with the help of the latest educational technologies.

In cooperation with leading foreign research centres the Department implements the unique masters’ programmes: “International Trading System” and “Strategic Entrepreneurship in the Global Economy”. The Department also trains over 30 Ph.D. students and candidates for Doctoral degree.

The Department is proud of its alumni. Most of them take prominent positions in industrial companies, commercial banks, consultancies agencies and educational centres in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities as well as in foreign countries.

The academic staff of the Department collaborates actively with international educational and research centres all over the world: Canada, German, the UK, Japan, Finland, Norway, the USA, etc. Our professors regularly teach abroad, issue articles and monographs. In turn, foreign lecturers are frequent visitors at the Department. Nowadays the academic staff consists of 5 Doctors and 18 Candidates of Sciences. From its establishment the Head of the Department is Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Sergey Felixovich Sutyrin.
